5 Benefits of Camping

One of my family’s favorite thing to do is CAMP! Camping provides rest and relaxation outside of the hustle and bustle of life. Many of us intuitively know we need to take time out to care for ourselves, but rarely get the chance because of the distractions in life. It may be worth carving time out to go camping even just for  a night or 2, once we understand the benefits of doing so.

1. Practice Presence.

Camping reminds and teach us how to slow down. Being in nature offers us the opportunity to practice presence through admiring the beauty, resting, hiking, yoga, ect. Yoga is the science of relaxation and presence. This is accomplished by asanas, body postures, and pranayama, breathing practices. Yoga in nature offers the solitude to look within, feel the feet on the ground, and look at the beauty all around. These actions release endorphins in the brain that make us feel content with what’s happening in the moment.

2. Love yourself.

Camping opens the space for nurturing the self. People have the freedom to choose what makes him or her feel good at all times. Actions of self-love remind us that we matter just as much as those we love.

3. Connect with nature.

Living in Nevada County allows all residents to have easy access to being in nature, but how many people take the time to be out nature daily? Most of us have jobs, families, and other responsibilities. There isn’t always enough time to get the daily dose of nature’s medicine, so retreats provide people to get a large dose of natures medicine.

4. Enhance immune system.

According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, being in nature boosts the immune system because we breathe in phytoncides that plants give off, which act as antibacterial and antimicrobial to our systems. Also, being in nature allows our nervous system to tap into the parasympathetic, rest and relaxation response, which allows the body to recalibrate its system, thus allowing healing to occur.

5.Improve sleep.

Camping has an added benefit to improving sleep. The Circadian rhythm of our bodies is regulated by light. Light gets fed through the eyes and streamed to the pineal gland. The pineal gland helps to maintain the body’s internal clock by secreting the hormone melatonin, which tells us when to sleep and when to wake up. Camping gives us the opportunity to be in the natural rhythm of the sun, so we can reestablish our circadian system allowing for better sleep.

Self-Massage: An Ayurvedic Daily Practice

Everyday we are bombarded with stress from travel, home life, relationships, work, or simply that we can't poop! Stress creates toxins, it's the real deal in this reality and we need to learn ways detox our bodies and handle stress better. Ayurvedic knowledge teaches the importance of daily routines that allows one to nourish and strengthen the body to prevent imbalances such as burn out, overwhelm, or toxic overload. One of these daily practices is called, Abhyanga, which means oil massage in Sanskrit.  Why give yourself a daily oil massage? The act of massage stimulates the lymphatic system. Lymphatic vessels run throughout the entire body just as the veins and arteries of the circulatory system do. The only difference between these two systems is that the heart pumps blood where as movement of the body moves lymph fluid. The lymphatic system removes toxins from the body in conjunction with the liver and kidneys. When the liver and kidneys are overloaded with toxins the lymph...

Thinking too much? Try this:

The breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. If you notice you've been thinking too much chances are you may not be breathing... Did you feed yourself today? I'm talking about breath! it's our first food, but not our only food, of course... 96.2% of our body mass is gas. Gas is electricity. Breath is electricity. We breathe in and out oxygen and carbon dioxide. Body mass breakdown of 96.2%: 65% oxygen 3.2% nitrogen 18.5% carbon 9.5% hydrogen  Only 3.9% of our body mass is comprised by the food we eat (minerals, vitamins, fiber). Most of our food is made up of gas too...proteins (amino acids) are composed of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen. Essential Fatty Acids are composed of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen. Sugar(glucose) is composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.  The yogi's knew this very well, so they did breathing techniques called pranayama. According to the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, pranayama regulates breath thus balancing the mind, promoting concentr...

The Art of Eating: Ayurvedic Guidelines to Healthy Eating

The art of eating is an old art that has come back around in recent times due to the prevalence of Americans that suffer from digestive issues in this world today. In 2018, a study was conducted and surveyed over 71,000 Americans and found the 2 out of 3 individuals experienced GI symptoms. Another article stated that most Americans that do have digestive symptoms don’t seek help. Digestion can be a sensitive topic for most or even mystery for some. I’ve noticed that sometimes uncovering symptoms from the body can be fearful and overwhelming, which could be a reason why it’s easy to ignore minor symptoms in the beginning. It helps to know the language of the body so fear can be diminished and confidence can take over. This is where knowledge and wisdom of Ayurveda shines! Ayurveda is the guidebook to your life that addresses the five senses, your thoughts, emotions and spirit. It is here where you can remember the wisdom and knowledge of yourself and your life. Ayurveda teaches, that o...
